Then there's the 12 hour halfthon, for those who lack the stamina for the full 24 hours. It will be run in a separate auditorium from the main marathon. Right now though which films will be shown from the full lineup for the halfthon is unknown. If you are worried about missing a certain film, sticking with the full 24 hour shebang is your best bet. But if you don't care one way or the other... HALFATHON TICKETS ARE $15 THROUGH APRIL 16 AND $20 AT THE DOOR. I've been going to the 24 hour marathon for years myself, it's a mere 20 minute drive from where I live and has always been a blast for me!
.
WARNING! Film lineup is subject to change due to last second problems with print availability or technical difficulties. Granted it has only happened with 6 films that I am aware of in the marathon's 26 year history.

"Godzilla vs. Biollante" Letter Campaign

It seems that out of the turmoil reguarding the Miramax Company, people wondered what would become of the still-to-be-released "Godzilla vs. Biollante". Well, after some research and some talk, people figured that Disney ultimately own the rights to the film. So sprung out of Tohokingdom.com/forums came this campaign to write and send letters to Disney. Some members of TK have already written letters. You, the reader, needs to too. I mean, only a 44 cent stamp and some time out of your life to write a letter, print it, put it on the envelope, close the envelope, and put the adress information and put it in your mail box. Some people have done it already, so do it to! We could make a diffrence! Though the odds are against us. But the more people who mail a letter, the better the odds are.

The adress you should send the letter to is:

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
500 South Buena Vista Street
Burbank, CA 91521

TK Mod GVAMP has written a letter which all you have to do is print out to be used:

"To Whom it May Concern:
Hello my name is (your name here); I’m a huge fan of Godzilla movies and noticed you currently hold the rights to the film Godzilla vs. Biollante, which HBO Home Entertainment released on VHS as well as Laser Disc way back in 1992. The film has also been shown on cable TV (Cinemax). The film is currently unavailable on DVD in the United States, despite its availability in many other countries. I was wondering if you have any current plans to release the film on DVD or Blu-Ray, as it is one of my favorite Godzilla films as well as one of the most-wanted films by Godzilla fansI’d also like to point out that companies like Sony and Classic Media have released several Godzilla titles over the past few years and they seem to be selling well; in fact Classic Media’s release of Godzilla, back in September 2006, was very critically acclaimed that year and won several awards, and has recently been re-released in Blu-Ray.If a release is planned, please include some special features, such as trailers and behind the scenes footage; Toho typically has such features on their Japanese releases of Godzilla films. Also, please include both an English-dubbed audio track as well as a Japanese track with English subtitles; Godzilla fans tend to prefer the option of seeing the films both ways!Thank you for your consideration of this request; I assure you that there are thousands of American fans who would be very desirous of adding an authorized version of this film to their collections!

Thank you:
(your name here)"

.
UPDATE: Thanks to KG member G-MATT, the title has been translated to read: "Godzilla, Unpublished Toho SFX Archives Material: Producer Tomoyuki Tanaka and His Era".

EXCLUSIVE: G2 - The Return of G

In 2008, Kiyotaka Taguchi made his first of so far two kaiju film. That film was "G". Now, young adult fan Logan is attempting to make his own sequel to the film entitled "Return of G" which a new Garemon mutation comes up and a new kaiju comes to defeat him. Here is an interview with "Godzilla 2000":

The beginings of a suit for the new Garemon mutation.

1. How did you become a kaiju fan?
-
My love of kaiju began at a very early age. My father, who passed on when I was 4, was a massive influence on my life in general. He bought me Godzilla films, mainly Showa, and a few Heisei. I was mesmerized by the concept of Godzilla ravaging cities, and fighting opposing kaiju. Like many youth, I took to the late Showa films the most, since they were targeted at a young age group. For a while, the only tokusatsu films I watched were Godzilla, but that changed with age, as I am now interested in all kaiju.
-
2. How has your love for kaiju changed over the years?
-
As I said, I loved Godzilla, and Godzilla alone (as far as kaiju films go) for a very long time. As I grew, so did my knowledge and love for tokusatsu, particularly kaiju. I have taken especially to independent films recently, although I am still an avid Goji viewer. I pop in 70's Goji and Showa Gamera for nostalgia, but I prefer early Showa (GvH being the exception) by far today. Independent films really have been great recently, works like G and Reigo are some of my favorite millennium films, beating out a couple of the Godzilla films in my opinion.
-
3. Do you have a collection? If so, what is your most cherished possesion?
-
Yes, I do have a collection. I have a few theatrical posters, tons of TM figures, and all of my VHSs and DVDs are on display, chronologically by year. My Godzilla films have their own rack, and the other films are on a shelf. I have somewhere around 50 kaiju films, getting more whenever I can. I couldn't honestly say I have one prized possession, but there are a few. One being my Cozzilla poster, for it's sheer rarity. The other being my 10" TM Godzilla, mainly for it's past.
-
4. What did you think of Kiyotaka Taguchi’s film, "G"?
-
I loved G so much, it just clicked with me. I like how it wasn't afraid to be violent, and the Cloverfield-esque filming gave me an intense vibe as I watched it. Garaemon is a great kaiju, unique, and not overly durable, like Heisei Gamera. Robo is such a classic design, and many of his scenes are absolutely epic. For instance, when Robo spins as he lands, it just gives you that "whoa" feeling. That very feeling returns when he launches his rocket fist, and once again later on in the film. I think Goro did a great job conveying emotion, and the other actors were a mixed bunch, some sub-par, others fantastic. The film is diverse, yet sticks to it's plot. Unlike most, I prefer G to Gehara. People who haven't seen this masterpiece (and are of appropriate age) must. -
5. How did pre-production on your film, "The Return of G" start?
-
Well, I've had the internalized desire to create a kaiju film for a very long time, and tried many times with stop motion, needless to say I failed miserably each time. G was the film that pushed me over the edge and made me say "I need to make a sequel." I wrote up a script, which I am constantly editing (as of 2/6/10). We have 2 cameras, for different shots, and of course, we are working on the suits. I'm not going to lie, we're rookies, so don't be expecting G3.
-
6. I understand that you contacted Kiyotaka Taguchi himself. What did he think of you making a sequel to his first kaiju film?
-
Honestly, the conversation was short. I simply announced my love for his film, and explained my reasoning for the sequel, and apparently, the translating program did a good job. I was replied to in a very straight forward and short thanks, and I was overjoyed, so production is in overdrive as of now.
A gun which shall soon try to slay Garemon!

7. Who is part of the production team and who is doing what?
-
A good friend of mine, Jake, is helping me a lot. He is providing our major camera, and is helping me with plot points, aiding me in many ways. Some local TK members are being a huge help, Fairy Mothra is doing concept art, Godzilla 2000 is doing greenscreen effects, and you, Evan, are helping me get the word out. I am going to be doing some suit acting as well as directing. Actors are no one famous, just local friends, just like in G, where the actors were college students.
-
8. I understand that you are making your own suit for this film. What is it being made of and how good will it look?
-
Well, we are basing the top off of underarmor, plating it with cardboard, Styrofoam, and latex, depending on the segment we are working on. Remember, we are first timers, so this isn't going to be gold. It should look good, but it isn't going to hold up to Toho and Daiei suits. Our opposing kaiju is still being decided. I have King Joe as a major hopeful, but it will be hard to make him, so not much information on major kaiju except Garaemon returns, in a further mutated form.
-
9. What has been some highlights of production so far?
-
Well, finishing the script was a hell of a milestone. I'm not going to give away too much, except the Garaenizer Injection is perfected and main-streamed. The beginning of suit creation was another high point of production. It was also great when I first became aware of all of the TK members that are aiding in the project, that was a huge morale boost.
-
1o. When was the script written?
-
Mid to late January. The project is in early development, but the script hasn't changed too much. The plot remains the same. Really, the major changes are to accommodate for the budget. There are some scenes where it's like "Well, we can't do that, no matter how great it would be."
-
11. What previous films will be major influences on you and this film? I understand there is going to be a little nod to G3 in the film…
-
Obviously, we are going to be following the nature of the first film. Although, throwbacks to some of our personal favorite Godzilla films will be spliced throughout. As you mentioned, there is definitely going to be a homage to G3 in the film, which will be subtle, yet in your face the entire time you watch.
-

Subtitle Script for "Gehara"

Since not every one is as willing to go the grey market way I go and went to see "Gehara", "G", and "Regio", I have taken the liberty to type out a subtitle transcript for Gehara. So those of you who have not yet seen for FREE on the internet Gehara have no excuse to not see the 20 minute short. It is a really cool film, you need to see it!

Watch Gehara here, subtitles are below the link:
http://roberthood.net/blog/index.php/2009/03/05/gehara-is-here/

Subtitles:

Scene 1: Ship Sinking In Japan Sea

Scene 2: News Report

Hideo: It looks like it was sunken by a hairy kaiju!
Wife: God, another "kaiju" story?
Mother: There isn’t anything like that in today’s world.
Hideo: Well, we are in the age of science. We have to uncover the truth.
Wife: Hideo!
Hideo: See you later!
Mother: Good luck!

Scene 3: Examination
Fisherman: Hair… Hair… Hair…
Doctor: His hair has strangely fallen out. He must have experienced something very terrifying.
Hideo: Mr. Murakami, what in the world did you experience?
Dr. Murakami: A sea-man could have doen this. Or, we can assume that a Keukegen might have caused it. Anyways, go ahead and go through all the materials we have and conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause…
Fisherman: HAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Murakami: Ow! Ow! Ect.

Scene 4: Tribal Scene

Tori Shrine Name: "Geharha Shrine"

Japanese TV: The authorities affirmed that a monster is involved in this series of disasters…
Dr. Murakami: We even thought it was done by the Gods, the old rulers of the earth. Considering all the evidence, it must be a monster. There is no question that this is all because of a kaiju.
Japanese TV: According to the authorities, the monster - now named Gehara from ancient lore - has hit the shore of the Kanazawa region. The situation of the damage is still unknown, but it is confirmed that Gehara is now heading to an urban area. Local residents should stay calm

Heisei Gamera TV Specials On Youtube

For those who love the Gamera trilogy, youtube member Onyasai21 has uploaded Japanese unsubtitled television specials for each film in parts complete with the commercials they were shown with (David Copperfield is among those advertised). Here is my analysis of the special for "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe" which I wrote on Kaiju Galaxy forums:

"And I got to say, the TV special - which I also found ones for G2 and G3 - already on their respective discs - is very revealing. First, it is interesting to see how G1 was promoted just as Gamera's return, while the second film was promoted as the tour de force of the Japanese SFX film, and the third film was like a Japanese "Tranformers".

To be more specific, it is interesting in the little details these things old. For the TV special for GGOTU, you see stuff like the inside of Daiei's production studios (decorated in GGOTU memorabilia), a figure contest for a Marmit figure (they film the winner and a kid crying because he lost), and extra footage from the Yabari International Fantastic Adventure Film Festival. Wanna know something which the ADV disc left out in that footage at the film festival? Acclaimed actress Michelle Yeoh saying how much she liked the film's SFX and how she wished that films made in Hong Kong can reach the same level of technical excellence. Mind blowing stuff in these things!"

Here is the URL to his homepage. Onyasai21also has some other rarities which are worth seeing - not to miss out.

Full Report: Teruyoshi Nakano SFX Film Festival

From December 26, 2009 to January 29, 2010, Japan’s HUMAX CINEMA (the same cinema which in 2009 held a Koichi Kawakita/Heisei Godzilla film festival) is celebrating the SFX films which had one man as their special effects director: Teruyoshi Nakano. Known primarily for his work on the 70’s Godzilla films, Teruyoshi was involved with the series since "Mothra vs. Godzilla". His best work however is in destruction films like "Submersion of Japan" and "War in Space". It is such "destruction" and non-kaiju tokusatsu eiga works that the Humax Cinema is celebrating. Here are the fallowing films which have been showcased so far:

1. Monkey (TV series, SFX director for some episodes)
2. Zoku ningen kakumei (English title unknown to the author)
3. Conflagration
4. Admiral of the Grand Fleet: Isoroku Yamamoto
5. The Secret of the Telegian (NOTE: Nakano-san was only a special effects assistant on this film)
6. Firebird: Daybreak Chapter
7. War In Space
8. Submersion of Japan

To this day, Teruyoshi Nakano keeps active. He has been graced with three award wins: two Japanese awards for best special effects ("The Return of Godzilla" and "Princess of the Moon", Teruyoshi’s final work) and a Mangled Skyscraper award presented by the staff of "G-FAN" magazine. Nakano-san keeps a good life today, occasionaly doing interviews and writing books on his memoirs on the set of many tokusatsu productions.

Teruyoshi Nakano To Be Honored

By the same cinema which lead the 2007 Koichi Kawakita honor. Similar poster and memorabilia produced for the Kawakita festival is to be produced for Nakano-san's. More information to come.

Thanks to Cody Himes for the correction of the "Nakano-san" phrasing (originaly Teruyoshi-san).

2010 Goji Ornament Revealed

Well, I decided to go over to KaijuHQ since I haven't been there in a while and their most attractive feature is their nice gallery of making of stills. Lo and behold, they have news on the 2010 Godzilla ornament which is a cool embodiment of the Desu-Goji suit. This is a quote from the site:

"From Jeff over at Long Island Treasures...
This year American Greetings / Carlton Cards will again be releasing another Godzilla ornament, this time from 1995's "Godzilla vs. Destroyah". It seems to represent Godzilla stomping his way through Hong Kong in his burning stage, will play Godzilla sound effects, and will light up (assuming the burning patches on Godzilla's skin will glow). This ornament will be available for pre-order in May 2010 and is pictured below."

Thank you KaijuHQ/Jeff of Long Island Treasures. Maybe this Christmas, I will buy all of the ornaments

New Book

I do not know what it is called due to my limited Japanese, but the title seems to be titled "Tokusatsu 魂 ~Toho 特撮奮戦記~". I do not know much more than that. It goes for $24. And again, it seems that someone is happy with Koichi Kawakita's work. The cover is beautiful to say the least.

UPDATE:
My friend KaijuNoMura has posted some information reguarding this publication here:
http://kaijucollector.b1.jcink.com/index.php?showtopic=309&view=findpost&p=3569

UPDATE NO. 2:
Turns out I got two diffrent translations of the title. Both from friends, one is "Koichi Kitagawa, The Spirits of Special Effects, The brave fight of Toho SFX Team" and the other being "Toho Tokusatsu - Tokusatsu Brave(ly) Souls". Take it as you wish.

West Kenji Model Kit Exhibit

Finaly news is picking up again, and this time I am blogging about something which this blog hasn't covered yet - the model/resin kit industry. In this case, it seems to be that a fan has chosen to show off his collection of model kits, most of them seeming to have come from West Kenji, one of the more popular popular companies which has been producing resin/model kits with high prices (rightfully so). Though the translated version of the original article does mention there may be more figures on display, including some non-West Kenji memorabilia. Links will be at the bottom. The exhibit is open for the next 11 days!

Essay By A Japanese Otaku

In this day and age, the majority english written material on tokusatsu eiga has been writen by American otaku. Very rarely does one find a piece composed by a Japanese tokusatsu otaku which is eye opening. Today is an exception - for all of you who read this blog. By clicking the link below, you will go to a page which in adobe format is an english language version of the paper "Signs Taken For Monsters: What Made Godzilla So Angry Then" by Hiromi Nakano. In this paper, you will be exposed to a great analysis of GMK with the fallowing:

-look into some alternate dialogue from the GMK script
-where Kazunori Ito got his ideas
-information from rare information sources, such as the "GAMERA PERFECT BOX" (a limited 2 book set)
-and alot more!

Happy reading and make sure to leave a comment!

Epic Fan Fic "Mothra and Godzilla: Future Destiny" completed!

By Donny:
"It is terrifying how quickly time seems to go by. As of a week ago I managed to complete Mothra & Godzilla: Future Destiny. After two difficult years of strenuous work and dedicated study, the piece of fan fiction managed to turn out well with positive feedback.I would like to reach out to those aspiring fan fiction writers out there who are discouraged by the complexities of producing a piece of literature---regardless the size. I cannot begin to name the number of times I wanted to give up, or thought that it was a lost cause but I feel that determination pulled me through successfully. There were days when I thought my writing was awful, and times when I thought my writing was phenomenal. I was self-conscious about what people thought about my work, but I realized that it really doesn't matter what other people think. What matters is what the writer thinks---if the story completes that person in some fashion. If there are ever difficulties whether it be being stuck in a rut of writer's block or something as simple as not knowing something, get help! Don't be afraid to ask someone else their opinion because that's what makes a writer improve---constructive criticism and reflection.I must say, it has been so fun writing Future Destiny Book I. While I am sad that it is finished (and happy at the same time), I am definitely looking forward to writing Book II.Here are links to two of the locations the story is posted at:

Looking for Someone Who Can Speak Japanese

Currently, my good friend and fellow Georgian citizen Avery Guerra has found out of an independent kaiju film that is like Gamera: "Ichimotsu", or also known as "Daikaiju Gami" for the rated G reasons. You can read about it here: http://roberthood.net/blog/index.php/2009/12/22/a-rival-for-gamera/
The point is that the film is not going to reach US shores in a legible form unless someone who is fluent in Japanese - in all three forms (writing, speaking, and reading) - is willing to translate the film for free. If you know of someone, leave a comment and please let me speak to you about this. Some canidates are already being looked through by me, but still drop me a message below. This is important!

Gift from GVAMP

Well known for being a head honcho over at Tohokingdom forums, GVAMP has asked me to post three templates for e-mails to diffrent companese onto the blog. These templates are mainly for the news that Sony within the next three years may release all their Heisei Godzilla/Mothra titles onto DVD on quality releases along with G2K. Also included is stuff for the Ultraman fans who wants to write to their favorite TV station to have them show their favorite Japanese Super Hero on TV. However, GVAMP asks that you send e-mails to only companese that own multiple stations. Here are the templates:

MESSAGE NO. 1
To Whom It May Concern:

I’ve read recently online that your company is considering reissuing your Godzilla titles from the 1990s series along with the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy. I must say that it’s a wonderful idea because I would love to have proper releases for most of these films. “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah” and “Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle For Earth” were released in Pan and Scan format on DVD. If you are indeed planning on re-issuing these titles, I would buy the set or individual releases in a heartbeat. Also, something I would like to see on the discs would be the trailers for the films. I’m not expecting deluxe editions of these films but a trailer would be nice, as well as complete prints of the film (no missing credits) and proper English subtitles.

Thank you,

MESSAGE NO. 2
To Whom It May Concern:

Dear ,
I was curious if you had any plans or would be interested in licensing any of the TV shows from the Ultraman TV series. I think it would be a big hit especially if you got the license for some of the older stuff. I know for a fact that I would watch it since I’m a huge fan of that type of show. If you have any plans to license it when could we expect it to air on ? If you don’t have any plans then you should at least consider it.

Thank you,

MESSAGE NO. 3
To Whom It May Concern:

Dear , I was wondering if you would be interested in releasing any thing from the TV shows in the Ultraman series? I know there’s a lot of interest in the older stuff, mainly "Ultraman". I know that Ultraman has been released by BCI and now Millscreek but the thing with those releases are that they aren’t sanctioned by Tsuburaya, the company responsible for creating the character. I won’t bore you with back story but the company had legal issues with another company and they where cleared up recently. I know a lot of fans would buy a reissue of the first set if you worked close with Tsuburaya in releasing it since they have all the original materials for the show (something that wasn’t utilized in the first set). Other possible series you could look into would be "Ultra Q", which was a precursor to "Ultraman". Also consider "Ultraseven" which was the second show in the series. Another good show to release would be "Ultraman Nexus" since it’s very popular with fans. The reason I contacted your label is because I know your label has released many genre titles so I figured you’d be the ones to contact.

Sincerely,
